Understand The Basics Of Motorcycle Engines

Motorcycles have been in use for more than ten decades. Since then, there have been several developments in their looks, design, parts and engines. Every development is made towards enhancing its performance and durability. Most of the automobile companies put efforts in improving the quality of motorcycle engines as they are highly responsible in deciding the performance of the bike. In these efforts, manufacturers have built dozens of engines but not all met the cost efficiency and customer satisfaction.

To work on the efficiency and performance of the motorcycle engines, one should know about its basics. Mainly, engines for all automobiles are similar. The basic mechanism includes a metallic cylinder and a head with valve train and pistons. The cylinder gets the fuel and cylinder through the regular opening of the valve. The spark plug creates a spark which ignites the mixture creating high pressure. With this pressure, pistons are pushed upward. A crankshaft connects the piston with the wheels and thus pistons cause the rotation of the wheels.

The basic difference in different motorcycle engines is that of number of cylinders. These cylinders can be from one to six. Earlier, only V-twin cylinders were in fashion in America and Japan. They were named so due to the pistons making a V angle with each other. This angle was different in different motorcycles. Harley Davidson has this angle value as 45 degrees. If in this twin cylinder type, pistons lie opposite to each other, it is termed as opposite twin type engine. One other type is parallel piston type where pistons are placed parallel to each other.

The latest trend in the motorcycle engine is of four cylinders. The presence of four cylinders increases revolutions per minute and thus smoothening the ride. Here, the arrangements of the cylinders can vary. They can be either being placed in a row or twin style type where two cylinders are put in V-shape and other two are arranged on their sides.

Apart from the cylinders, the capacity of any motorcycle engine depends upon the power output. This output can be from 50cc to 1500cc. Small motorcycles generally have low power while the power increases with the size and number of cylinders.

Among the large number of engines designed by the manufacturers, it is Harley Davidson engine which is unique in everything. Whether you compare its appearance, sound, quality, engineering technology or any other characteristics with other engines, it will stand out in the forefront. It is said that one should always pick its engine from the dedicated shops only to get the genuine parts. Apart from the engines, these dedicated stores will also provide you with other parts like Harley front end, Harley handlebars, lights, mirrors, speedometer, etc.

One way to approach these dedicated shops is to browse online. Nowadays, many a shops have started providing their online services where you can browse different items and place the order. With the easy payment options, you can get genuine parts right at your door step. So, next time whenever, you go for automobile parts, try some online options also.
